Introduction & Background

Jamie Sue Gee, known as Susie, battled severe obesity and diabetes, reaching over 500 lbs (227 kg), which made daily life a struggle. COVID-19 isolation worsened her challenges, and her condition was compounded by Clinical Myopathy, a muscle disorder inherited from her father, a Vietnam War veteran exposed to Agent Orange. Her mobility and independence were critically limited.

Challenges and Decision to Seek Treatment

Susie’s fight for better health was driven by her strong will and family support. Her brother, Jim Gee, recognized her need for specialized care to combat her diabetes and related conditions. Guided by others’ positive experiences, they chose to pursue advanced treatment at the Changsha Jingkai Medical Center in China.

Upon arriving on December 25, 2023, she was warmly welcomed by hospital staff with flowers and gifts, ready to provide the care she urgently needed.
"My two biggest blessings—my godson and grandson. I thank God every day for these boys. They give me the reason to keep going. I just want to stay healthy so I can be there for them as long as possible."

"Two of the biggest blessings in my life. I thank God everyday for both of them. Children are such a blessing. My godson and my grandson. They give me will to live. I want to be healthy for these two young men so I can always be part of their life as long as I can. I'm going to keep driving to become an as healthy as possible."

Medical Assessment and Treatment

Susie’s condition presented unique challenges for Dr. Sun (孙跃辉) and the team at Changsha Jingkai Medical Center. They developed a treatment plan involving experts in nutrition, endocrinology, and psychology, centered around the innovative use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to create insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. This approach aims to reduce diabetes symptoms by up to 85% and support natural weight loss, avoiding the need for invasive procedures like gastric bypass surgery.

Progress and Outcome

After ten days of intensive care, Susie made remarkable strides, achieving independence in standing and walking for the first time in years. In 6 months her weight dropped from over 500 lbs (227 kg) to 388 lbs (176 kg), demonstrating the efficacy of stem cell therapy and dedicated care. This experience renewed her motivation to embrace a healthier life for her godson and grandson and equipped her with new methods to manage pain.
